WILMINGTON - Bruce (Sparky) Robert Failing,71 passed away Thursday, June 23, 2022 at Lower Cape Fear Life Center, Wilmington, NC.
Bruce was born December 17,1950 in Schenectady, New York and was the son of Robert C. Failing and Doris F. Failing of Wilmington, NC. In addition to his beloved parents, he survived by his siblings, Linda F. Clover of Wilmington, NC, Barbara Failing of Monroe, NC and Brian Failing of Charlotte, NC.
The family moved from New York to Waynesboro, VA in 1954 where Bruce attended school through 1968. The summer of 1968 the family moved to Wilmington, NC. Bruce attended his senior year and graduated from John T. Hoggard High School in 1969. It was during his senior year that Bruce was known as "Sparky". He never met a stranger. Bruce continued his education at UNC-Wilmington graduating in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Bruce played baseball from Little League through his first year of college including pitching for the American Legion Baseball team in Waynesboro, VA that won the 1968 state championship that year.
"Sparky" spent his final years at Carolina Beach, NC where he made many new friends.
A celebration of Bruce's life will take place at Windermere Presbyterian Church on Eastwood Road, Thursday, June 30 at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, Bruce requested Memorial Gifts be donation to UNCW Seahawk Club/Baseball team in his memory at 601 South College Rd, Wilmington, NC 28403
The family would like to thank Dr. A. Afanador and Dr. John Bell for their compassionate care of Bruce as well as the nurses and staff at the Zimmer Cancer Center.
